Best new music: Flock of Dimes finds healing in simplicity on ‘Long After Midnight’

Every Monday, 88Nine music director Erin Wolf shares a sonic gem she found using her nearly 20 years of new-music exploration experience. You can hear all her discoveries every Sunday on What’s All This: Adventures in New Music

Jenn Wasner (Wye Oak, Dungeonesse, Bon Iver) returns with a third album for her Flock of Dimes project, which she’s used to explore the dreamier and more electronic textures of her songwriting.

On new album The Life You Save, it seems the project has dialed in its vibe. Wasner is stepping into the realm of simple and searching — and in that simplicity and active discovery lies the beautiful light of transparency and healing. Nowhere is that more evident than on lead single “Long After Midnight,” which hovers on Wasner’s voice and her acoustic guitar, leading the listener to what’s coming on the full album and the why behind it.

“This record is different. It’s an attempt to report from inside of a process that is ongoing and unfinished: my struggle within the cycles of addiction and co-dependency,” Wasner shared. “In the end, it is my hope that this record exists as a testament to the depth of my love for those I cannot save, and that it might provide some comfort for anyone who is still learning how to love and live for themselves.”

The Life You Save comes out Oct. 10 on Sub Pop Records, but you can hear “Long After Midnight” from Flock of Dimes right now on the latest episode of What’s All This via the player at the top of the page (and in regular rotation on 88Nine). I’ll be back at 2 p.m. next Sunday and every Sunday with another collection of tunes, so make sure to dial into 88Nine for What’s All This: Adventures in New Music.
