Every Friday, 88Nine music director Erin Wolf and Lilliput Records co-owner Tanner Musgrove tell you about the new albums you can’t miss on a new episode of On Vinyl. Check out their top picks and a list of this week’s other releases, and listen to their full conversation using the player on this page or on the 88Nine airwaves at 1 p.m. every Friday.
This Friday, it’s a holiday weekend and one of the biggest days to put a dent in ye olde holiday shopping. So where better (and what better) than to visit a local record shop (and scoop up some special releases) for that vinyl lover on your list?
As a shopping adventure goes, RSD — that’s Record Store Day, for the uninitiated — Black Friday 2025 might be a little more hopping than usual. But there are some truly unique delights available on this day only: lots of comps and anniversary celebrations (aka reissues), and we went with the four that spoke best to us.
Whether the vinyl is red, white or a vivid picture disc, we hope you snag something with that celebratory feel, perfect for stepping into the holiday season. Happy New Music Friday!
Record Store Day Black Friday: top albums
Wilco, Jeff Tweedy and Daniel Johnston, dBpm 15
If you’re unfamiliar, dBpm Records is a label based in Chicago and founded by none other than one of Chicago’s finest, Wilco. This special release includes 12 rarities and unreleased tracks that highlight 15 years of music put out by dBpm.
This will be the first time most of these songs are available on vinyl — tracks like a version of “Casper The Friendly Ghost” by the late Daniel Johnston and Jeff Tweedy, and Wilco’s cover of The Beatles’ “Don’t Let Me Down.” To help us get in that holiday spirit, there’ll be a red vinyl exclusive for RSD Black Friday.
Talking Heads, Tentative Decisions: Demos & Live
Another special available on Black Friday is this release chronicling the very very beginnings of The Talking Heads. Founding members Chris Frantz and David Byrne met as students at the Rhode Island School of Design, and made music in a college band called The Artistics. As fledgling groups do, they recorded some demos that are pretty special because they include songs that eventually became Talking Heads’ classics like “Psycho Killer” and “Warning Sign.”
This fresh collection from Rhino Records comes on white vinyl featuring 11 demos in total, along with live tracks recorded by the original trio lineup, including bassist Tina Weymouth, going back to 1975 and 1976. If you’re a Talking Heads’ fan, this one’s a fun time capsule to make an old fave feel new again.
Sleigh Bells, Treats
This is another one celebrating a milestone from a band that made its first mark pretty emphatically. We can personally attest to this, having seen Sleigh Bells live as they toured this 2010 breakout album — and having sustained permanent hearing damage as a result (worth it).
Treats finally gets a proper reissue this Friday with its first pressing since 2012 (that’s 15 years, which is a little mind boggling). Even though the initial run for Black Friday is a smaller pressing of 1,500, it is an “RSD First” release, which also means we should see a larger pressing available in 2026.
The RSD Black Friday version comes on blue and white vinyl, and includes a 16-page booklet and poster insert via Mom + Pop Records.
B-52s, Wild Planet
It’s the 45th anniversary of The B-52’s sophomore record, which gets a fresh reissue and picture-disc status for the shopping holiday. We love The B-52s’ pizzazz-full vibe and feel lucky to have caught them at PrideFest in 2018 — one of the most joyful shows we’ve been to. Both danceable and quirky, their music is wildly creative and just plain fun, and this album is a prime example, making it a must-have for any record collector. Find it out on Rhino Records.
