On-Air Host / Personality

Job Type: Part-Time Exempt (5-10 hours/week)
Supervisor: Assistant Program Director
Compensation: $20.60 per hour

General Functions

The On-Air Host represents Radio Milwaukee’s voice in the community by introducing programs and music, reading promotional copy and public service announcements, and contributing to station social-media initiatives. The person in this role will maximize audience acceptance and ratings by effectively projecting the station’s desired on-air image in a professional manner while performing the required technical functions of assigned air-shift.

The On-Air Host must be able to follow the station format, company policies and procedures, state and federal laws, and FCC rules and regulations while working as an effective team member. This includes planning, preparing and delivering live and recorded program shifts in an entertaining and professional manner, and in a style consistent with the appropriate station format.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

  • Host a three- to six-hour recorded weekend shift and fill in for other full-time shifts as needed.
  • Produce and record assigned promotion or public service announcements in a professional manner.
  • Participate in weekly music meetings.
  • Contribute to other Radio Milwaukee content when available, including artist interviews and various digital content.
  • Participate in on-air fund drives and special broadcasts
  • DJ and host Radio Milwaukee events, and represent the organization at partner events.
  • Communicate effectively with members of the listening audience by answering phone lines.
  • Follow and enforce FCC regulations, station and company policies, and Emergency Alert System procedures.
  • Ensure contests and promotions are conducted in compliance with FCC regulations, as well as federal and state laws.
  • Maintain the program and music logs to ensure underwriting and promos are aired at the times logged, the program log is properly signed and initialed, and any omissions are noted.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Experience with automated radio broadcasting software (ENCO, Selector, Music Master, Zetta, etc.).
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Takes direction from Program Director, Operations Manager, Market Manager or other company management, and adjusts performance or behavior appropriately.
  • Understands the culture and community of Radio Milwaukee’s target market.         
  • Well-read, knowledgeable and articulate in dealing with current affairs and information appropriate to the music format.
  • Understands listener motivation and fosters loyalty among the target demographic.

Education & Experience

  • Minimum of two years’ experience in broadcasting as an On-Air Personality operating audio equipment for both live and automated broadcasts.
  • Minimum of two years’ experience in voicing and producing audio.
  • Live DJ and event-hosting experience.
  • Bachelor’s degree preferred.

The employee is occasionally required to operate a motor vehicle. The employee is occasionally required to bend, stoop or kneel; and lift, carry and/or move up to 25 pounds.

Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision and the ability to read from a computer or electronic device, and the vision required to operate a motor vehicle.

The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate and occasionally loud during music events. The employee is exposed to outdoor weather conditions during work-related travel.

Our creative Walker’s Point office includes a full kitchen, green roof/deck and performance space. We currently operate on a hybrid schedule with a minimum of four (4) days per week in the office.
