We receive support from members like you and community partners.

Each month we shine a light on partners in our community. This month, meet City Year Milwaukee!

Hi, what's your name and title at your organization?

Meralis T. Hood, Executive Director of City Year Milwaukee

What's one song you can't stop listening to?

"X" by Nicky Jam and J. Balvin!

What are you most passionate about in regards to what is happening in our community and what is City Year doing for the community?

I am passionate about the promise and energy of the young people in this city. I am passionate about ensuring they have equitable opportunities in school and in life that preserve their dignity and maximize their potential.  I am inspired by the City Year Milwaukee AmeriCorps members who make the choice to serve all day every day - starting before the first bell rings, providing support in English and math, encouraging positive attendance and providing social and emotional support for students. They inspire me to think more critically about the impact of my own daily choices and to continue advocating to create viable opportunities for young people to stay in Milwaukee and continue building it.

How did City Year get started and what's in store for 2018?

Nationally, City Year is celebrating 30 years in service. City Year Milwaukee was founded in 2010 and we are proud to be welcoming our ninth corps this year. We will have 120 AmeriCorps members serving as student success coaches in 13 schools. Also new this year, our corps members will be wearing a new uniform. Look out for black pants and new shirts but don't worry, our signature red City Year jackets are here to stay!

Why do you choose to support 88Nine?

To me, 88Nine has always represented inclusivity, civic engagement and a forum for new thoughts, new ideas and new music. Through thoughtful programming, 88Nine helps us face the facts about where we are as a community and fuels our hope for where we want to be. We support 88Nine because you embody the spirit and idealism of Milwaukee.
