In the Mix: A rave classic revisited, French Horn Rebellion and Hipster Disco

Lindsay Hicks

Last week, legendary hitmaker Moby teamed up with DJ, producer and label owner Miss Monique to celebrate the 30th anniversary of his rave classic, “Feeling So Real,” with a refreshed 2024 version. A team-up of talents like that was impossible for me not to include in this episode.

The updated "Feeling So Real" captures its original essence while adding a modern edge, leaning more into drum-and-bass than the trance elements of the '90s. Additionally, Miss Monique contributed a remix, infusing her signature melodic house vibe that’s become a staple of her sets and Monique’s Siona Records label.

Our show didn’t stop there. We kicked things off with fresh new tracks like "Soulful House" from Michi and a vibrant dancefloor mover from SOPHIE featuring Kim Petras and BC Kingdom. The set was filled with standout tunes that established the tone for an unforgettable mix show.

For the DJ mix portion, we featured some names that are as incredible as the are familiar. First up was Robert PM, one-half of the duo French Horn Rebellion. When I invited him to share something with our audience, he noted, “This has been a fun one for me. I haven’t made a mix in a minute!” His soulful and uplifting set includes tracks from toucan sounds, his Brooklyn-based label.

Robert is one-half of Milwaukee-born duo French Horn Rebellion, along with his brother David. You may have caught the world premiere of their song, "Brothers," on 88Nine earlier this week — a celebration of both their new EP of the same name and an upcoming hometown performance this Saturday at the Miramar Theatre.

You'll also hear my interview with Hipster Disco founder Nico at Nite, who generously delivered another guest set for this episode. Born in Chicago, raised in Baraboo and now based in Milwaukee, Nico has brought a unique concept to the legendary Miramar Theatre, blending DJ sets and live musicians while showcasing indie hits from the 2000s and beyond. At every Hipster Disco, you can expect to dance to tracks from acts like M83, Toro y Moi, Phoenix and more.

Get this episode rolling using the player at the top of the page, and don’t miss the Hipster Disco dance party with French Horn Rebellion this Saturday night!
