La Alternativa: Cain Culto will not be contained or confined

Courtesy of the artist

Every week, La Alternativa delivers the very best from the Latin alternative scene by curating a blend of emerging and established artists within the Latin diaspora, while providing a platform to champion our growing local music scene. Listen on demand here and on 88Nine from 10-11 p.m. every Wednesday.

This episode found us diving into some beautiful new releases, including a standout track from Carla Morrison, who returned with a collaboration alongside Pablo Alborán.

“Si Te Quedas” is tender and soaring — everything you’d expect from two of the most emotive voices in Latin music. Their harmonies feel intimate and cinematic all at once, a reminder of Morrison’s gift for turning vulnerability into something powerful and expansive.

We also tapped into the growing sensation that is Bratty, who continues to carve her own lane in indie pop, and we even shared a traditional holiday treat: the beloved classic “El Burrito Sabanero.” But the artist we really want to spotlight is Cain Culto.

With his fiery new single “Basta Ya!” and the bold EP occulto 001, the queer pop experimentalist is clearly done whispering in favor of pushing musical boundaries and calling out injustice with fearless clarity. Known for viral, genre-breaking moments like KFC Santería, Culto continues to build a world entirely his own, blending experimental electronics with bluegrass, Latin pop and hip-hop through his Colombian and Nicaraguan roots, as well as his Kentucky upbringing.

“Basta Ya!” is a sharp, heartfelt demand for accountability and justice that feels like a breakthrough moment. Culto isn’t just making music; he’s creating a new lane for global pop — one that’s fierce, visionary and entirely his own.
