La Alternativa: Spotlighting soulful sibling sounds from Sotomayor

Daniel Patlan

Every week, La Alternativa delivers the very best from the Latin alternative scene by curating a blend of emerging and established artists within the Latin diaspora, while providing a platform to champion our growing local music scene. Listen on demand here and on 88Nine from 10-11 p.m. every Wednesday.

On this episode, we turn our ears toward the vibrant, rhythm-filled world of Sotomayor, the Mexican electronic Afro-Latin duo known for blending global beats with soulful, dance-heavy production.

Formed by siblings Raúl and Paulina Sotomayor, the project fuses Afro-Caribbean percussion, Latin rhythms and electronic textures into a sound that feels both rooted and super futuristic. Their music moves between deep grooves and atmospheric soundscapes, always anchored by Paulina’s refreshing, hypnotic vocals and positive energy.

The track is representative of what you’ll find on their new album, WABI SABI, which dropped Feb. 13. Inspired by the Japanese philosophy of finding beauty in imperfection and transience, the record is a textured, rhythmic journey that leans into warmth, vulnerability and sonic exploration. It invites listeners to move, reflect and reconnect — exactly the kind of boundary-pushing Latin alternative sound we love to highlight on La Alternativa.
