Chilean rapper Ana Tijoux was born in France to Chilean parents, exiled during the Pinochet regime in the 1970s. She began her music career in the ’90s with the group Makiza and has become known for her poignant lyricism that often centers on political repression around the world, like on breakout tracks “1977” and “Shock.”
Our conversation, which weaves between Spanish and English (with translations inserted), focuses on her latest project, 97, an EP team-up with longtime friend Daniel Celso (aka DJ Dacel). She reflects on the record’s story of friendship and her evolving relationship with hip-hop while touching on the importance of collaboration and what brings her joy at this moment.
