Every week, La Alternativa delivers the very best from the Latin alternative scene by curating a blend of emerging and established artists within the Latin diaspora, while providing a platform to champion our growing local music scene. Listen on demand here and on 88Nine from 10-11 p.m. every Wednesday.

For this episode, we were excited to welcome guest host Ceci Tejeda, a Milwaukee-based visual artist who uses cartoneria — a unique and traditional papier-mâché technique — to create alebrijes and large-sized pieces to support various social-justice movements and activism.

Tejeda’s family roots extend from Michoacán, Mexico, and the Purépecha blood in her veins runs deep. In our conversation, we talked a lot about how her indigenous culture has played — and continues to play — a significant role in her life. We also discussed her current project titled “Conectando Memorias” (a collaboration with her brother Samuel), migration and how to get involved in upcoming events.
