We continue our guest host series with local artist and Latino Arts managing artistic director Jacobo Lovo. We talk about Macondo Collective Project (the artistic collective he’s a part of), his early years in Nicaragua, magical realism and how memory infers his visual work.
The Macondo Collective Project currently has a show on exhibition in the Catacombs of Neto Art Museum located on 207 E. Buffalo St., Suite LL18. “Reconociéndonos / Recognizing Us” is an opportunity to delve into personal and collective memory, starting with an opening reception from 3-5 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 26.
This episode is a great opportunity to enter into the world of magical realism through music and art, with Jacobo as your guide. He has a piece in the show and provided this description for us:
“Ayer Sigue Siendo Hoy” is part of my Anachronic Beings series. Anachronic means “out of chronological order” and is part of an interpretive framework through which I explore memory and lived experience. Drawing from subject matter rooted in my own experiences, the series examines how memories recur across time, shaping who we were, who we are and who we continue to become.
In these works, memories become anachronic beings: presences from the past that continue to influence our identities and our sense of place in the world. “Ayer Sigue Siendo Hoy — Yesterday Is Still Today” speaks to the cycles that repeat throughout politics, families and relationships, remaining central to our evolving sense of self.
The rooster is both a visual motif and a dynamic, metaphorical presence in my work. I paint roosters from a place of nostalgia and admiration for their beauty, but most importantly as a tribute to the strength and resilience I see in my cultural heritage, my family and the people in my community.
