Guitar in hand, SASAMI goes to battle on the swoon-worthy ‘Honeycrash’

SASAMI; Facebook

Every Monday, 88Nine music director Erin Wolf shares a sonic gem she found using her nearly 20 years of new-music exploration experience. You can hear all her discoveries at 2 p.m. every Sunday on What’s All This: Adventures in New Music

“I wanted to write a song with all the drama of a 19th century classical opera but with the patience and understanding of someone in therapy in 2024,” Sasami Ashworth (simply known as “SASAMI”) said of their latest song called “Honeycrash.”

She continued her vivid, analytical description, saying, “With a guitar as my sword and my steed, it’s about wanting to fight for the pinnacle of passion and desire but knowing that you can’t change or rush someone else’s feelings or where they’re at.”

The weathervane artist who can go from metal to radio rock in two seconds revels in the latter on “Honeycrash,” exercising her ballad chops by writing a swoon-worthy, distortion-laden, kick-drum propelled chorus. It sounds surprisingly mainstream for the indie artist but also spells out that SASAMI knows very well what she’s doing by claiming all genres for herself, writing about “primal rage” — as she calls it — in an accessible and true-to-herself way.

Find the new single from SASAMI on Domino Records and on 88Nine’s airwaves on the regular, then be sure to check out a fresh batch of tunes on What’s All This at 2 p.m. Sundays on 88Nine.
