Every Monday, 88Nine music director Erin Wolf shares a sonic gem she found using her nearly 20 years of new-music exploration experience. You can hear all her discoveries at 2 p.m. every Sunday on What’s All This: Adventures in New Music.
Isn’t it true that sometimes the best things come in small packages? London folk singer-songwriter Laura Marling puts this theory to the test with her slight-yet-hefty sweetheart of a lullaby called “No One’s Gonna Love You Like I Can.”
In this barely 2-minute track, Marling leaves the guitar behind in favor of piano and strings dancing behind her timeless vocals. And while this particular lullaby / love song is meant for her baby daughter and feels deeply personal, any listener with half a heart can translate Marling’s message to reflect on their nearest and dearest.
With its brief structure, one wonders whether this song might be just a sigh of an interlude to glue the longer songs together on her forthcoming record. Either way, it leaves an impression and stokes my curiosity for what lies ahead.
Look for that new album, Patterns In Repeat, released to Partisan Records on Oct. 25, and wrap yourself in “No One’s Gonna Love You Like I Can” below. I’ll be back with another fresh batch of tunes on What’s All This: Adventures in New Music at 2 p.m. every Sunday on 88Nine.
