Best new music: Our Girl shine on the stormy ‘What You Told Me’

Every Monday, 88Nine music director Erin Wolf shares a sonic gem she found using her nearly 20 years of new-music exploration experience. You can hear all her discoveries at 2 p.m. every Sunday on What’s All This: Adventures in New Music

London’s Our Girl just released The Good Kind, another batch of their shimmeringly stormy brand of Britpop. Bright guitars and synths temper the intensity of lead single “What You Told Me,” which centers on tough times and trying to rise above — in this case, seeing illness affect someone you love and the heartbreak of that experience.

Our Girl guitarist/vocalist Soph Nathan shared that the whole album is built on the theme of absorbing setbacks and gamely trying to turn them into superpowers. Produced by the legendary John Parish, the record also saw input from talented Warpaint drummer Stella Mozgawa. It’s a poignant and polished sound that hits all those tender, emotional spots.

Find The Good Kind out now via Bella Union Records and “What You Told Me” embedded below, then make sure you find What's All This for my latest collection of the best new music every Sunday at 2 p.m. on 88Nine.
