Best new music: Foxwarren return from a break with orders to ‘Listen2me’

ANTI- Records; YouTube

Every Monday, 88Nine music director Erin Wolf shares a sonic gem she found using her nearly 20 years of new-music exploration experience. You can hear all her discoveries at 2 p.m. every Sunday on What’s All This: Adventures in New Music

AM radio-tinged folk singer-songwriter Andy Shauf’s project Foxwarren is back in action after a seven-year hiatus, and it’s a truly gratifying return to form.

Lead single “Listen2me” is a layered, playful delight — and also keeps things numerically congruent as part of Foxwarren’s second album (appropriately entitled 2). Shauf leads the way with his distinct vintage drawl, and the band manages to sound both soft and hard, leaning on that duality and juxtaposing gentle polyrhythms, big guitars and fuzzy synths.

2 comes out officially May 30 on Anti- Records, and there appears to be a small tour shaping up later this summer with Waxahatchee. Listen to the lead single “Listen2me” on the latest episode of What’s All This using the player at the top of the page, then be sure to check out a fresh batch of tunes on What’s All This: Adventures in New Music at 2 p.m. Sundays on 88Nine.
