Every Monday, 88Nine music director Erin Wolf shares a sonic gem she found using her nearly 20 years of new-music exploration experience. You can hear all her discoveries at 2 p.m. every Sunday on What’s All This: Adventures in New Music.
Calling all Caroline Polachek fans: Find her in a more understated state, singing on U.K. band caroline’s new song, “Tell me I never knew that.”
London avant-rockers caroline create super-interesting tapestries of sound and — as an eight-piece — can really open up, making use of electronics, strings, horns and beyond. Polachek joins on their sprawling and thoughtful track, singing ponderingly, “I don’t even know if I’m alive / But I don’t wanna be somebody else. … Maybe I don’t wanna be anyone.”
Polacheck feels really fitting as the vocalist for a song like this, her voice crossing the line of human and machine. Also, she and the band just happen to share the same name. What could be more perfect?
Hear caroline’s “Tell me I never knew that” on the latest episode of What’s All This, which you can enjoy in full using the player at the top of the page. The track will also be part of Caroline 2 when it arrives May 30 on Rough Trade Records. I’ll be back on 88Nine with another bunch of new songs for you at 2 p.m. next Sunday and every Sunday on What’s All This: Adventures in New Music.
