“The Payoff” is a new Sub Pop single from Josh Tillman (aka Father John Misty) that follows “The Old Law,” released earlier this year. The song dwells on a dark cloud of hopelessness over a persistent harpsichord-forward march, and feels a little dark and feverish while reminding me quite a bit of MONO’s classic hit single, “Life in Mono.”
“The Payoff” was co-produced with Drew Erickson, who Tillman worked with on his last two Father John Misty albums. There’s no official word whether this is a single from a forthcoming full release or just a standalone track. What we do know is that Father John Misty is on tour this summer, with a stop at Milwaukee’s Summerfest on June 19.
