This week on Cinebuds we will be discussing the Romanian film that won last year's Golden Lion, the top prize at the Berlin International Film Festival (one of the big ones!). The film is called "Bad Luck Banging or Loony Porn" (amazing title), and it's the story of a teacher whose sex tape with her husband gets spread on the internet and finds her job at a prominent school in jeopardy.
That's the premise, but the film is much more than this story. The story is the framework around which the culture and issues of Romania are heaped upon. There is humor and absurdity, and there is a literal vocabulary lesson and survey of Romanian history and culture in the middle of the film, which adds context.
It's not a movie that will play at your local cineplex. It's mildly experimental story structure that helps to highlight both the funny and tragic elements of a country. We're also talking about what else we've been watching and teeing up the 2022 Milwaukee Film Festival, April 21 through May 5.
