The Antetokounbros bought (part of) the MLS team in Nashville

Milwaukee Bucks and general NBA megastar Giannis Antetokounmpo has beefed up his sports portfolio, with MLS side Nashville SC on Thursday introducing him and his three brothers as new members of their ownership group.

Giannis, Thanasis, Kostas and Alex Antetokounmpo were joined by another big-name athlete: Filip Forsberg of the NHL’s Nashville Predators. They’re now part of an ownership group that was already loaded with star power, including Music City native Reese Witherspoon and Tennessee Titans running back Derrick Henry.

The two-time MVP and NBA champion dipped his toe in the waters of sports ownership with the Milwaukee Brewers in August 2021. That made him the first new individual investor since Mark Attanasio took over the club in 2005.

At the press conference, he shared that someone brought up the idea of owning a soccer team in Europe, but he opted to reach out to the Brewers instead. Eighteen months later, he has the best of both — albeit in Nashville instead of Napoli or Norwich City (like a certain Brewers colleague).

“My father was a professional soccer player, and it was the first sport I fell in love with in Greece,” Giannis said in a release from the team. “I’ve always had the dream of owning a soccer team. When my brothers and I explored Nashville SC, we knew it was a team and a city that we wanted to get involved with. I couldn’t be more excited to join the Boys in Gold and can’t wait to come to a match at GEODIS Park soon!”
