Try these off the beaten path Milwaukee restaurants

Off the beaten path 4th base

Each Friday at 8 am on 88Nine, Milwaukee Magazine’s dining critic, Ann Christenson, and 88Nine foodie Tarik Moody discuss Milwaukee’s culinary and restaurant culture.

On this week’s show, we talked about searching for Milwaukee restaurants off the beaten path. We also discussed a Funky Fresh Spring Rolls, Wisconsin's Grilled Cheese Championship, and the James Beard Awards.

Off the beaten path

In the latest issue of Milwaukee Magazine, Ann revealed six Milwaukee restaurants that are off the beaten path.  Restaurants like 4th Base located near Miller Park.  Celebrating its 40th anniversary, 4th Base serves dishes like seared scallops, aged steaks, sea bass and more.  It doesn't offer the standard menu, but offer suggestions. Did I mention, prices aren't listed on the menu.

There is also the Valley Inn located in the Piggsville neighborhood. The restaurant is best known for their sandwiches and pizza.  Other places that Ann shared includes Conway's Smokin' Bar and Grill, Sherman Perk and more.  Check out the latest issue of Milwaukee Magazine for all the details.

Funky Fresh Spring Rolls

Milwaukee's popular Funky Fresh Spring Rolls recently won a small business grant via a competition sponsored by FedEx. They were one of 10 winners nationally.  FedEx will give  Funky Fresh a grant of $7,500 and $1,000 in  FedEx Office services that will help get their tasty and healthy spring rolls in grocery stores.

was named today as one of 10 winners nationally in the 5th annual FedEx Small Business Grant Contest. FedEx will be giving Funky Fresh a grant of $7,500 and $1,000 in FedEx Office services that Funky Fresh will use to get their products into a grocery store aisle near you.

Wisconsin Grilled Cheese Championship

On April 29 in Dodgeville, the annual Wisconsin Grilled Cheese Championship will take place.

Amateurs and professionals compete in separate "heats" in four sandwich categories: Classic, Classic Plus One, Classic Plus Extras, and Classic Dessert. (All entries must use REAL WISCONSIN CHEESE.) Judges score the sandwiches based on presentation, taste, and style. First, Second and Third place awards and prizes are given for each sandwich category for both amateurs and professionals. The "Lorin Toepper Best of Show" is also awarded for the most outstanding grilled cheese sandwich of the competition. There is also a special competitive heat just for Young Chefs (aged 12-17).

Other activities include live music, beer and wine, grilled cheese sandwiches, exhibitors, and lots of fun! The 5th Annual Wisconsin Grilled Cheese Championship will be held at the Ley Memorial Pavilion at Harris Park in Dodgeville, Wisconsin.

James Beard Awards

Don't forget the James Beard Awards will hold its gala this Monday.  Milwaukee's own Justin Carlisle of Ardent and Red Light Ramen is up for Best Midwest Chef.  You can stream the awards via the James Beard Foundation website.
