Inside a real estate tycoon's 1856 estate

The estate of former Milwaukee real estate magnate Jacob Nunnemacher near 27th and Morgan is for sale, but it'll need a little work.  And a few dumpters, says OnMilwaukee's Bobby Tanzilo, who visited the site this week on Urban Spelunking.

But first, who is Nunnemacher?

The Swiss born butcher moved to Milwaukee in the late 1840s, and in 1853, bought a nearly two-acre lot near 27th and Morgan Ave.  After years of running his own business and investing in residential property, he built himself a home in 1856, raised cattle on the land, and operated a distillery until his death in 1876.

Since then, the property has seen many uses, and its basement is still full of junk from its past lives. The most recent occupant, the Wildenberg Hotel, closed its doors in 2014.

But the structure is still standing today, and is one of the oldest in town, Tanzilo writes.
