The Arts @ Large future Walker's Point home is officially under construction

This week on Urban Spelunking, we've got an update on a story we brought to you last year.

Arts @ Large has officially begun construction on its future home in Walker's Point. The nonprofit marked the occasion with a kickoff celebration last week.

Listen to the full podcast episode below where OnMilwaukee's Bobby Tanzilo and I talk about the groundbreaking where Arts @ Large President Raul Gutierrez and Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett spoke.

This is the new home of Arts @ Large:

The former butcher shop and Polish community center will undergo a dramatic transformation in the coming months, adding additional studio space for students, plus administrative offices and space for other nonprofit organizations.

It will also expand its student-run coffee shop, Cafe@Large, and will work with MPS students in the design process.

"This is just the beginning of a great new community center, and a great destination for the City of Milwaukee," said Rudy Gutierrez, chair of Arts@Large board of directors, at the kickoff event.

Arts@Large works with thousands of students in 40+ Milwaukee area schools where art programs have been reduced or eliminated.
