A downtown Milwaukee building that has been vacant for several years is getting new life, as its owners plan to open a tasting room and expand production of craft spirits.
Central Standard Craft Distillery is currently renovating the 1874 Edward Townsend Mix building at 320 E. Clybourn Ave. and plans to open before the summer.
The project includes a top-to-bottom rehab and will include a 100-gallon still, focused on "innovation" of unique spirits, plus a bottle shop, a rooftop lounge and office spaces.
Architectural character
Mix is a Milwaukee architect worth knowing. As OnMilwaukee's Bobby Tanzilo points out in his recent story, you'll find his work all over the city, including the Mackie and Mitchell Buildings on Michigan Street, in addition to churches and mansions.
He also designed "Old Main," the central building on the Old Soldier's Home campus near the V.A. in Milwaukee, which is also currently being restored.
Look close at the top of the building, and you'll see a placard bearing the architect's name -- MIX -- an unusual nod to the designer not typically seen on buildings. Mix was also the building owner, so it makes sense he'd take advantage of the opportunity to "sign" his work.
