This Wauwatosa school was used for emergency veteran housing after WWII

You'd never guess by looking at it today, but dozens of WWII veterans called this former Wauwatosa school home as they returned from the war.

Like many public buildings across the country, State Street School, 4610 W. State St., was divided into housing for veteran families while they awaited more permanent housing.

But as the housing shortage persisted much longer than expected, those accommodations, originally intended to be temporary, became more permanent. According to OnMilwaukee's Bobby Tanzilo's research, residents lived there from 1946 to 1954.

In this week's Urban Spelunking podcast, we talk about that unique chapter of the school's history. We also get into the school's other uses over the years, which dates back to 1880.

Listen to the podcast below, and visit OnMilwaukee for a historical deep dive.
