Milwaukee jazz artists will pay tribute to the music of Thelonious Monk

Thelonious Monk Milwaukee Dreamland

This Saturday at Company Brewing at 9:00 pm, you can see the Milwaukee jazz ensemble, Dreamland pay tribute to the music of Thelonious Monk.  The concert is presented by Voodoohoney. Dreamland features Jamie Breiwick (Trumpet), Jonathan Greenstein (tenor saxophone), Mark Davis (piano), Clay Schaub (bass) and Devin Drobka (drums).

The group will perform the obscure and lesser-performed compositions of the legendary jazz pianist and composer.

For the uninitiated, Monk's compositions and improvisations feature dissonances and angular melodic twists and are consistent with his unorthodox approach to the piano, which combined a highly percussive attack with abrupt, dramatic use of switched key releases, silences, and hesitations.

Monk was renowned for a distinct look which included suits, hats, and sunglasses. He was also noted for an idiosyncratic habit during performances: while other musicians continued playing, Monk stopped, stood up and danced for a few moments before returning to the piano. Monk is one of five jazz musicians featured on the cover of Time magazine.

There will be $10 cover for the show. You can also make dinner reservations via Company Brewing's website or by calling 414-930-0909.
