Studio Milwaukee Session: Dehd

While Milwaukee and Chicago have an occasionally contentious relationship, everything’s pretty hunky-dory when it comes to the music scene. Today brought us another example of that as Windy City trio Dehd — with no nighttime show in the area — spun up I-94 for a Studio Milwaukee Session featuring tunes from their anticipated fifth album, Poetry.

With the possible exception of the Green Bay Packers, few people are more excited when a group from Chicago visits than we are. Ratboys, Whitney and Kara Jackson are just a handful of artists who’ve dropped by our space recently for a performance, and adding Dehd to that roster was a treat for the Radio Milwaukee members in the room.

The lead single off their upcoming album, “Mood Ring,” has been a frequent flier in the 88Nine playlist and found its way into a session that saw the trio dig deep into their energy reserves after, as Emily Kempf shared, a late night out dancing. They found more than enough in the tank for a set that got a couple audience members dancing themselves as the band warmed up for their weekend appearance at Austin Psych Fest.

Even putting aside the folks bouncing along with the music, there was a lot of love for the band in the room and a palpable desire for them to expand on the four-song performance with a proper Milwaukee show down the line. Jason Balla said this fall just might bring the group back to town, but for now the session will have to tide you over.

You can use the player at the top of the page to hear the broadcast performance and interview that included tales from Dehd’s epic West Coast road trip/writing session that eventually became Poetry. The album is up for pre-order on Bandcamp right now, and make sure to check out our membership page to see how you can sit just a few feet from the next national touring band we welcome to our Walker’s Point home.
