"The Neighborhood Project": Martin Drive | Steve Falsetti and the Community Garden

Listen: I love the neighborhood as garden metaphor -- in order to be successful, a good deal of investment needs to be made up front, followed by a steady stream of care. If for some reason the maintenance breaks down, the progress will slowly deteriorate. Of course, the required work can be challenging, but its rewards are far greater -- every year the results become more impressive and more bountiful.

Last year, for the first time, the Martin Drive neighborhood organized a community garden in a small green patch off Vliet on 47th Street. While many neighbors pitched in what they could, neighborhood newcomer Steve Falsetti took ownership of the project. I caught Steve making preparations for this garden, with the promise of Summer and bloom just a handful of days away: This is another Martin Drive landmark that I bike past every day without stopping. Looks like there's going to be an extra pit stop on my daily commute this year...

Interested in Martin Drive? You can learn more about them on their Facebook neighborhood profile, and of course, you can always go and check it out for yourself!
