Listen: This week, we're delving headlong into Lindsay Heights, a mega-neighborhood in the central city comprised of smaller communities. Spanning from Walnut Street on the south to Locust Street on the north and from I-43 on the east to 20th Street on the west, there is plenty of territory to explore, so continue checking back all throughout this week for new stories of this neighborhoods rich personality. If you're unfamiliar with Lindsay Heights, and even if you are well-versed in the neighborhood, the Zilber Family Foundatio n's wonderful Zilber Neighborhood Initiative serves as a wonderful entry point. Along with Clarke Square (more on that next week), ZNI is working with Lindsay Heights to organize its resources, both natural and human, and create a plan to ensure a bright future. Start with their simple and incredibly informative map of Lindsay Heights, and continue to the Lindsay Heights Quality of Life Plan.
And for our first audio piece of the week, we begin with a great advocate for the neighborhood, Alderman for the 15 District and Common Council President, Willie Hines. On a bright and energizing morning, I went to the Walnut Way Center on 17th and North Avenue for their annual Lift Up, a celebration and day of service pulling together Lindsay Heights neighbors and volunteers from a number of institutions ( SDC and UWM were strongly represented). Walnut Way is found in the southern portion of Lindsay Heights, and on that Saturday morning, they were an inspiring whirlwind of spring cleaning and garden planting (more on that later in the week!) -- the perfect time to reflect on the history and progress made by Walnut Way in recent years.
