"Safe Streets, Healthy Kids": Hopkins Street School Walking Club

Listen: In recent years, there’s been a national push to fight the issues of childhood obesity and juvenile diabetes. Clearly, instilling the value of a healthy diet and active lifestyle in youth is important, but there’s only so much you can do in a traditional classroom. So, how do we effectively make progress towards those goasl?

This week, we’ll be looking at the theme of “Healthy Lifestyles,” but the messaging of the interviewees won’t be that straightforward. The kids aren’t simply taught that exercising is good or that a nutritious diet is prudent. Rather, their teachers teach them that these things are fun and normal. A subtle difference, but an important one in reaching kids.

This first piece is a great example of that idea. I stopped by the Hopkins Street School Community Learning Center, and hooked up with their walking club. Take a listen to how the kids have a bunch of fun learning the ins and outs of pedestrianship: see podcast below.
