"Meet The Need": Day 18 of 50 | Giving A Voice to Young People

Listen: Thanksgiving! On Day 19 of 50 in Meet The Need, we head to Capitol Drive and just off Fond Du Lac to meet Urban Underground. It's one thing to expect young people to stay out of trouble -- it's a completely different proposition to give them the opportunity to shape their own world. At Urban Underground, they see no reason to compromise expectations for their young people.

Let Executive Director Sharlen Moore and Program Director David Bowen bring you inside:

-At Urban Underground, they go beyond just giving young people a safe place to be -- they work with them, on their terms, to make the change they want to see in their community:

-The work they do at Urban Underground was a response to the fact that teens weren't getting something they needed -- something that was both engaging and safe:

-Sometimes, asking a youth a question as simple as "What do you want to be?" is an important first step in setting them in the right direction:

-You can get to know the youth at Urban Underground by getting involved as a volunteer in the programs or helping them improve their physical space:

(Note: In the pieces, I errantly refer to Urban Underground as being five years old -- they were actually founded in 2000)

This year, we ask you to adopt one or two organizations that connect with you. Want to get involved with the Urban Underground? Donate, volunteer, or check out their work yourself. And you can start with their website.
