Daptone Records set a new vibration for the world when they released the first Sharon Jones and The Dap Kings records back in 2002. Since, they have continued to excite audiences with their throw-back soul sounds. Using old school recording techniques and keeping true to the soul sounds of days past, the Daptone family has released some crucial records over the past decade.
Many of the players in Daptone family, are members of several groups. The Dap Kings, The Sugarman 3, The Budos Band and the Menahan Street Band share several common players. Both The Budos Band and Charles Bradley will be here tomorrow, so I thought we'd look at the music of the label.
In 2008, the Menahan Street Band released an unlikely hit with "Make The Road By Walking".
This track was sampled later that year Jay Z used the sample for his hit "Roc Boys". The song was produced by Diddy and two of his producers known as LV and Sean C from his production team, The Hitmen. They didn't give the Menahan Boys any publishing credits, but they did give their album a boost.
While this is the most notable sample use of the song, it was also used by MF DOOM on a project he did with Sacha Baron Cohen. In 2006, during a stint out west to promote his then new movie, Sacha Cohen, (aka Borat) met Daniel Dumile, better known as Zev Love X, or MF DOOM. They recorded a few freestyles and old verses from beats that Cohen made on his laptop. This fun afternoon, turned into a mixtape, which was released in 2010.
