New Near-Zero Waste Music Festival To Be Held in Milwaukee in September

On September 18, 2011, Milwaukee's first near-zero waste large-scale music festival will be held at Veteran's Park.  The name of this festival is called 'Rock The Green,' and it will be bring five nationallly-renowned acts to play this unique festival. Lineup will be announced on July 18 and tickets will go for $25.

First off, this festival will not sell any bottle water. Instead, there will be filtered water stations on the festival grounds where festival-goers can fill up their Rock The Green water bottle, which will be provided upon entry. The water will be free, filtered and dispensed from the municipal water source.

Local food vendors will be creating special menus with a focus on locally grown, sustainable and healthy food options. There will be on-site recycling and composting provided the festival's title sponsor Veolia Environmental Services.

Veolia will also showcase emerging green technologies, eco-friendly educational programs and tips on reducing your carbon footprint.

The festival will use revolutionary production practices to reduce their footprint including the following:

  • Powering the festival with clean energy using solar, wind and bio-diesel powered generators
  • Replacing all disposable items with their compostable equivalents
  • Managing waste recovery stations both back of house and throughout the festival grounds
  • Carpooling, public transportation and bicycling to the event will be encouraged
  • A free bike valet service will be available for event attendees
  • Free water stations as opposed to plastic water bottles

Rock The Green will also give back to local non-profit from some of the proceeds of the ticket sales.  The Urban Ecology Center will be the first benefactor.
