Sounds Like Reggae, Tastes Like Kollywood...Must be From Cuba; and Only on Sound Travels

Always new with the new week, Sound Travels today featured four new cuts from various corners of the world. Remember Buena Vista Social Club? The Cuban all-stars who for many, ARE Latin music? Well, though many of the artists who were on the original Ry Cooder-produced project are no longer alive, the music certainly lives on. Ibrahim Ferrer passed in 2005, but somehow, the awesome tune I played from the Buena Vista: More Havana Stars, was never released until recently. Lest we forget how good a singer he really was, I played it today cause he still sounds fresh...

Remember Sublime? If you do, and thought they were done, think again. They've survived the death of Brad Nowell, and time itself by moving forward; making the same So-Cal reggae they were famous for and adding singer, Rome and calling the new lineup Sublime With Rome. On their new 2011 album Yours Truly, we find a surprisingly great release of classic-sounding Sublime material. Rome definitely brings a bit more patois to the party, and after a a couple of listens, I have no doubts-- I think Sublime is back. There's even a collab with Wiz Kalifa on the album that also features this tune.

Also played a tremendously catchy tune from an uber-mysterious cat called Captain Planet. The cut had a lot to like; an infectious and rhythmic Brazilian beat laced with vitage samba samples and plenty of thump. The man who goes by Captain Planet returns to form on Bastard Jazz Recordings with a dancefloor-destroying 12” steeped in the tough international breakbeat sound that he’s become known for, leading up to his first full length album dropping in the fall..

The last tune I had today was pretty funny, a bit kitschy and mega funky. Shankar Ganesh's "Cola Cola Coca Cola" is a quirky-but-amazing slice of Kollywood funk. What's that? Kollywood, is Nepal's answer to Bollywood (yep, hollywood it is not), and the new compilation Play That Beat Mr. Raja vol. 1 throws down some vintage gems from an obscure scene in Kathmandu, Nepal. This release is why I love world music, totally unexpected brilliance from corners of the world you'd've never known. Till today that is...
