Bunzel's Old Fashioned Meat Market: You Can't Beat Their Meats/Make Milwaukee 2012 Week 1

It's that time of year again---where we at 88Nine Radio Milwaukee look at what "makes Milwaukee" an artistic, creative, historic, delicious place to live. Really. The Make Milwaukee campaign does just that: Over the next 12 weeks, Bri and I will be showcasing the people, places, and things that make Milwaukee what it is, what it was, and what it will be.

So, let's start off with......MEAT. Lotsa meat. Bunzel's Old-Fashioned Meat Market and Catering has been an historic, family-owned Milwaukee mainstay for quite a long time now. I actually discovered it by accident about a year and a half ago when I first moved back to Milwaukee from Santa Fe, NM. It faded from my memory, and was resurrected when our advisory committee met to discuss what would make some good stories for Make Milwaukee.

Voila! Meat! Walking into Bunzel's is like taking a step back in time....perhaps to the 1950s; the staff know their meat, they know their cheese, they know their produce, and they are friendly and willing to share their knowledge in way that perhaps harkens back to those 'good ol days'. I met with Chip Bunzel, the owner, and we talked about the history of the store, his favorite cuts o' beef, and why vegetarian is a dirty word. Just kidding, of course.
