Paul's Boutique Sample Exploration PART ONE

This week on the 2 O'clock Break, we are going to explore the Beastie Boy's "magnum opus" album.

Paul's Boutique was released in the summer of 1989.  The album was considered a commercial disappointment for the executives over at Capitol Records.  While the album's initial sales we thin compared to License To Ill, it's gone on to become one of the "most important records" in the history of Hip Hop music.

The Beastie Boys set out to LA after the extensive touring and commercial success they saw with their freshman album.  They wanted to do something new, and working with the Dust Brothers, was the breath of fresh air the band needed.

The Dust Brothers had been working on an instrumental album, and when the Beastie heard this project, they knew they had to have it.  That instrumental project became, PAUL'S BOUTIQUE.

Today we looked at the song "Shadrach"

Lot's of cool samples in this one.  James Brown, Rose Royce, The Fatback Band, and Sly and the Family Stone's "LOOSE BOOTY" is the main hook and melody of the track.
