Luo Roots, Obama Beat!

Continuing with the Kenyan music this week on Sound Travels. Once again, the sound is rooted in the musical tradition of the Luo tribe and finds expression through a pretty modern guitar, bass and drum foundation expressed in uniquely Kenyan fashion. Fusing Congolese finger-picking guitar stylings with indigenous rhythms under lyrics sung in the ubiquitous Swahili language of the region, the music is irrepressably happy and still quite cool despite its vintage status.

Les Mangalepa "Kisumu 100"

Issa Juma "Ma Eliza"

Orchestra Les Mangalepa "Dracula"

Samba Mapangala "Obama Ubarikiwe"
