When you release a mixtape entitled The Great Mixtape, you better live up to that name. That is what newcomer Sampa The Great just did with her debut tape.
The poet, singer/songwriter and MC from Sydney, Australia -- by way of Zambia and Botswana -- has created one of the most refreshing hip hop releases of 2015.
Sampa The Great combines elements of Lauryn Hill, Bahamadia, Nneka, Erykah Badu and Diggable Planets with the sonic aesthetics of an either early Madlib or Brainfeeder release. She is the hip hop equivalent of her fellow countryman Hiatus Kaiyote. Her smart lyrics blend well with the jazzy production of Australian beatmaker Godriguez.
Standout tracks include "Weoo," "Jamal," and "Class Trip."
