2023 Grammy Awards: Not as Beyoncé as it could’ve been

The Recording Academy / Facebook

It’s hard to say who was the big winner from Sunday night’s Grammy Awards. It certainly didn’t feel like there were any, although Beyoncé probably got closer than anyone when she picked up her record-breaking 32nd Grammy by winning Best Dance/Electronic Music Album for Renaissance. But on a night when the Queen got shut out of album, song and record of the year, it sort of left me with a gross-but-familiar taste in my mouth.

Here’s some quick, strictly gut reaction stuff so I can go to bed. Harry Styles winning Album of the Year for Harry’s House didn’t feel way out of bounds considering how omnipresent he and that album felt this year. And Lizzo is a force of nature, so “About Damn Time” getting Record of the Year brought about some warm fuzzies and the night’s best acceptance speech.

But while absolutely nobody is arguing about Bonnie Raitt’s status as an absolute icon of music — country or otherwise — I mean … Song of the Year? Of the YEAR? I couldn’t in good conscience make an argument I could stand behind for any song other than “Break My Soul” based on how absolutely seismic it was when it dropped. Plus it’s a damn good song.

Outside of that, yay for Wet Leg, boo for Spoon failing to win their first Grammy, and yay for everyone who saw that back-to-back Busta Rhymes/Missy Elliott section from the salute to hip-hop. It was the greatest performance-related thing of the night, and my heart goes out to Nelly for trying to follow it. They should’ve ended the show right there and sent everyone home.

You can see how most of the major categories shook out below. If you want to dig into the full list, you can do that over at the Grammy website.
