A native of the Bronx, Samara Joy became entranced by classic R&B as a child and cut her teeth as a singer in her church’s gospel choir. And while her family history is deeply musical—her grandparents helmed the Philadelphia gospel group the Savettes, and her father, the musician and songwriter Antonio McLendon, has produced, composed and arranged his own astounding original work—she didn’t delve into the jazz tradition until college at SUNY Purchase. During her studies there she won the 2019 Sarah Vaughan International Jazz Vocal Competition, which introduced her to the larger jazz scene as a rising star to watch. She was heard, by audiences and critics alike, as a masterful interpreter of jazz standards and a rightful heiress of the sound, technique and charisma that defined her jazz heroines—including Vaughan, Betty Carter, Abbey Lincoln and Carmen McRae.

Joy released her self-titled debut on the Whirlwind label in 2021, followed a year later by Linger Awhile, her breakout Verve debut, of which Down Beat said, “With this beautiful recording, a silky-voiced star is born.” The album earned her a Grammy for Best Jazz Vocal Album in addition to a headline-making win for Best New Artist. A deluxe edition of the album was released, as well as the EP A Joyful Holiday, which took home Grammys for Best Jazz Vocal Album and Best Jazz Performance in 2025. Her latest Verve album, Portrait, which Joy co-produced with the veteran trumpeter/bandleader and multi-Grammy winner Brian Lynch, showcases the intimate, soulful chemistry she’s developed with her touring band, earning her an NAACP Image Award in 2025 for Outstanding Jazz Album and the GRAMMY for Best Vocal Jazz Album in 2026. Portrait also spotlights her burgeoning gifts as a lyricist, in ingenious arrangements that meld her thoughtful words with music by Charles Mingus, Sun Ra and her late mentor Barry Harris

The evening unfolds across seven carefully curated courses, each a testament to the depth and elegance of Japanese culinary culture. Three decadent Wagyu courses, paired with rare Japanese whiskey and spirits, give way to three stunning sushi courses accompanied by a thoughtfully guided sake pairing. A sake expert will be on hand throughout the evening to walk guests through each selection, offering insight into the craft and tradition behind every pour. The night closes on a sweet note with a dessert course worthy of the meal that came before it.

Milwaukee event band Reunion Remix is taking over The Cooperage for a free night of live music, food, drinks and dancing — basically, all the fun parts of a great reception without the ceremony, seating chart or awkward family photos.

Throughout the evening, catch Reunion Remix’s full six-piece band, plus its piano/vocal and acoustic duo configurations, performing dance-floor favorites spanning decades and genres.

Grab a drink at the bar, sample food and sweets from local vendors, hit the dance floor, or just hang out and enjoy the music.

Planning a wedding or event? It’s a chance to experience the band, venue and participating vendors in action rather than at a traditional expo.

Not planning anything? Even better. Bring some friends and help us pack The Cooperage for Milwaukee’s most fun imaginary wedding reception.

St. Bernadette Parish, 8200 West Denver Avenue (about three blocks south of Good Hope Road) invites you to enjoy their fabulous fish fry on Friday, September 18, from 4:30 to 7:00PM in the parish hall. Included in a $18 dinner are fish, coleslaw, fries, rye roll, tartar sauce, lemon wedge, and coffee. Soda, beer, and desserts are available for purchase. A small portion dinner is available for $15. In addition to individual dinners, we also offer a family bucket for $46, which includes 1.5 pounds of fish and the sides, as well. We offer carryout and sit-down dining.

We can accommodate large groups. Just give the parish office a call (414-358-4600) or send an e-mail (stbernadette@nwmcp.org) ahead of time and we will reserve enough tables for your group members to sit together.

For over 10 years, we've been supporting local farmers, food producers and artisans, & creating a more sustainable community. Every week, the market is home to about 45 farmers and food producers, selling a first-class mix of produce, plants, cut flowers, bread and baked goods, award-winning cheese, coffee, waffles, popsicles, fish, meat and poultry, and prepared breakfast and dinner items. The first Saturday of each month, we also add a Makers Market, featuring a juried selection of local artisans selling handmade arts and crafts.

The Tosa Farmers Market is a local not-for-profit organization that carefully curates the best, freshest foods in the region, but it’s more than that. It’s a community hub for foodies, cyclists, coffee-lovers, music fans, yogis, kids — and all their neighbors.

Food Not Bombs Community Pantry is held every third Saturday of the month in the Jackson Park parking lot.

Free food pantry, household items, clothing, toys, hygiene. Hot/fresh food and coffee/water also available. Donations accepted and welcome, even on the day of the event.
