Born Farrokh Bulsara in Tanzania in 1946, he rechristened himself Freddie Mercury and his charisma, vocal range and outsized personality made him one of the all-time great frontmen in rock as the lead singer of Queen. He sadly succumbed to AIDS in 1991.
