The undefinable NNAMDÏ is a can’t-miss at Cactus Club

Milwaukee’s concert scene has a lot going on, so we look at the shows coming up to find the ones you’ll look back on and be glad you went. Then we add them to our weekly Milwaukee Concert Picks.

Remember those old, copper-colored exercise bikes where the handles move and the wheel is a fan? That particular machine is the centerpiece of NNAMDÏ’s video for “ Dedication” and also sort of summarizes the kind of artist he is: off-kilter and unexpected.

Vintage cardio equipment will likely not be present when NNAMDÏ makes a rare visit this Thursday, Oct. 20, at Cactus Club with Josh Virtue. But good luck not breaking a sweat because this show in support of new album Please Have a Seat will get you moving.

The Chicago-based musician has been busy as all get-out, bringing his mix of hip-hop tinged with pop and hardcore — all underlit with jazzy elements — to anyone with an ear for smart, fun, genre-defying sounds. He’s spent recent years touring with everyone from Wilco to Sleater-Kinney, and black midi to Jeff Rosenstock.

NNAMDÏ is funny, earnest and amazing. If you’re unfamiliar, don’t wait to check out his super creative music videos. It’s worth a trip down the rabbit hole (we’ll put one below to get you started). Just make sure to get out of there in time for Thursday’s show. You can get tickets in advance right here for $15 or at the door for $17.
