Carl “Buffalo” Nichols' musical heartbeat is the blues, even while it shapeshifts and changes pace. As his star has risen, it’s gotten harder to keep up and catch him at a fantastic hometown spot like Cactus Club. Today was a reminder of that, as the venue added a second performance slot to his upcoming appearance with Stephen Hull on Sunday, Feb. 5.
With the 5 p.m. all-ages show now completely sold out, you still have a chance to catch Nichols at 8 p.m. (ages 18+). No doubt the set will include his most-recent song, “Meet Me In the Bottom,” a heavy and heady track produced by Kyp Malone of TV on the Radio that Nichols described as "a classic blues song, reimagined as an action movie.” With the track's churning organ sounds and a call to action of “yeah, meet me in the bottom and bring my running shoes,” Nichols hits that notion spot-on.
Considering the upward trajectory his career is on, you might want to grab this (last?) chance to see Nichols in a place like this. Tickets are $15 (available here) and $20 at the door. Although with the way the first show sold, I wouldn't count on that "at the door" option.
