Elephonic hits hard and fast with poppy, punchy ‘Until the Sound’

When you hear about a band preparing their debut album, you don’t immediately expect a polished, complex sound. But Elephonic isn’t your typical group on the verge of their first release. This collection of veteran Milwaukee musicians has some serious bona fides on their collective resume (The Blow Pops, The Lackloves, Semi-Twang, I’m Not a Pilot), and the new single we’re premiering here reflects that depth of talent and experience.

“Until the Sound” hits you right over the head with Elephonic’s entire arsenal. Keys, strings, guitars, percussion — everything meshes perfectly from the first note. The same goes for Mike Jarvis’s layered vocals as he relays the tale of a couple trying to find the joy in their relationship’s complexities:

Contradiction is my thing
Denial is yours
One thing is for certain
We’ll never be bored

In a previous iteration, that story was more epic than parable. But a little intra-band communication tightened things up to create the track premiering today. “The song was originally over seven minutes long,” Jarvis said, “but drummer Steve Vorass suggested lopping off the second half, and it’s remained that way since.”

That’s the version you’ll hear on Elephonic’s self-titled debut LP when it comes out May 1. The band also has an album-release show on the books May 13 at Anodyne on Bruce, with Chris Haise Band and the Belle Weather opening.
