Lucius, Hot Chip bringing dance beats to Turner Hall

You wanna get down and/or boogie? Then you wanna be at Turner Hall Ballroom for a couple of shows that’ll make it impossible not to move, groove, etc.

Lucius is up first April 4 with opener Danielle Ponder for a night we’re excited to present. While you may not have heard of the Brooklyn-based indie-pop group, I can almost guarantee you have heard lead vocalists Holly Laessig and Jess Wolfe. The duo have lent their harmonies to the likes of The War on Drugs, The Killers, Black Pumas and Harry Styles, although that last one was an uncredited appearance on his 2019 track “Treat People With Kindness.”

This past April saw the release of their second album, Second Nature, produced by Brandi Carlile and Dave Cobb, who has worked with the likes of Sturgill Simpson and Chris Stapleton. No doubt that influence came in handy for the smattering of Americana on the LP, but many of the tracks would’ve slid right into a night at Studio 54 (see below for a prime example).

More evidence of disco’s non-deadness carries into the next month, when Hot Chip plays Turner on May 24. Last August, the English electro-beat legends released Freakout/Release, their eighth album overall but first one written entirely together as a band. In his review of the LP, Pitchfork’s Philip Sherburne noted that “its sound reflects that pooling of energies, full of exuberant dance rhythms and arrangements that burst at the seams.”

Tickets for Hot Chip are on sale right now online and at the Pabst/Riverside box offices. Lucius has an artist presale that starts at 10 a.m. tomorrow, Feb. 8, an eMember presale the following day at noon and a general sale Friday beginning at 10 a.m. You can find that ticketing information online and visit the box office after the general sale gets underway.
