Tyler Childers seems to like Wisconsin, and Wisconsin seems to like Childers right back.
The artist often described as neo-country or bluegrass or contemporary folk or some smash-up of the three was in Milwaukee just a few months ago as one of Summerfest’s amphitheater headliners. Next summer, he’ll double up on that by playing a pair of dates July 26 and 27 at Alpine Valley Music Theatre in East Troy.
Across his decade-plus career, Childers has built a reputation as a thoughtful artist willing to weave social issues into his music. His last two studio efforts both landed in the Billboard top 10, with the ambitious triple album Can I Take My Hounds to Heaven? reaching No. 8 in 2022 and last year’s Rustin’ in the Rain hitting No. 10.
That most recent album stuck pretty close to the “country” part of Childers’ genre stew, with Pitchfork’s Nadine Smith noting that “its songs take the dirty stains on his shirt and the scraggly edges of his sound as a badge of honor.”
Both of Childers’ shows at Alpine Valley include openers The Hold Steady and Medium Built. Tickets go on sale at 10 a.m. next Friday, Nov. 22, with several presales coming before. You can sign up for the presales and find more information about ticketing via the event page on Ticketmaster.
