Jeff Tweedy is not messing around.
The Wilco frontman and tireless music magician has decided to go very, VERY big for his next project: a triple album titled Twilight Override that’s set for release Sept. 26. Suffice to say, he’ll have plenty of new material to share on the fall tour that will follow, bringing him to Milwaukee’s Pabst Theater on Nov. 5.
Tweedy recorded and self-produced his fifth solo album at his studio in Chicago with a slew of special guests, including Sima Cunningham, James Elkington, Liam Kazar (who will open the Milwaukee show), Macie Stewart, and his very own kids, Spencer and Sammy. Befitting a project of this magnitude, Tweedy shared a lengthy explainer that included this eye-catching section:
What I really want to do is grow my heart big enough to love everyone. And if I want a heart big enough to meet this moment, it requires something expansive. “Like a TRIPLE record!?,” you ask? Yes! Like a goddamn triple record! I mean … what else do I have but my songs and my family and my friends? What else do any of us have to keep the lights on? How else can I generate my own light? To me, any song, no matter the subject matter, can be a point of light and that’s one of the reasons I try and make so many of them. They all have the potential, even the heaviest music on the earth has the potential, to lift someone up.
He described the project as three standalone chapters that stand alone but, when combined, “tell a story of the past, present and future.” Also appropriate for an ambitious release, Tweedy shared not one but FOUR lead singles: “One Tiny Flower,” “Out in the Dark,” “Stray Cats in Spain” and “Enough” (which you’ll catch in the 88Nine rotation).
Tickets for Jeff Tweedy’s show Nov. 5 at the Pabst Theater go on sale at 10 a.m. this Friday, July 18, online and at the Pabst/Riverside box offices.
