Jose Gonzalez on Kranium

Jose Gonzalez picks "Can't Believe" by Kranium

My guest today is Jose Gonzalez. Jose Gonzalez is a singer/songwriter who has been making some of the most beautiful music for the past decade. His last release was 2015's "Vestiges & Claws," and he is going to be in Milwaukee this Saturday, Aug. 31, at the Pabst Theater. He called me from his house in Sweden.

Justin Barney: What is the last song that you couldn't stop listening to?

Jose Gonzalez: A song called "Can't Believe."

Justin Barney: By who?

Jose Gonzalez: Kranium, Ty Dolla $ign and Wizkid. A combination of many artists. It's very upbeat, and it's amazing to put that song on while I'm running.

Justin Barney: I am just looking at the YouTube thumbnail here, and it looks to be quite a bit different from the music that you make.

Jose Gonzalez: Yeah, I mean I would say that the song is very poppy. It is far from what I usually do.

Justin Barney: What draws you into that song?

Jose Gonzalez: It's a perfect pop song. I've been into dancehall, poppy music not only from Jamaica, but from Nigeria. I guess many of the songs that I enjoy having around most of the time are in major, or in these mystical chord progressions that I associate with Tropicalia. The songs that I get attached to in the long run are of course the ones with beautiful singing and usually something in the lyrics that keeps you thinking or evokes some sort of strong emotion.

Justin Barney: Yeah, I like that description of mystical chord progressions.  Let's get into it.
