Spellbinding iLe track tears down the idea of the ‘difficult’ woman

Every Monday, “Add of the Week” unveils all the new songs going into the 88Nine on-air playlist, with one hand-picked selection put in the spotlight by a member of our music team.

Puerto Rican artist Ileana Cabra, who records under the name iLe, released her wonderful third album Nacarile recently. Its 11 tracks often feel like someone wrestling with forces beyond their control but refusing to relent. “Traguito,” which translates to “little sip,” has that battle spirit.

To help tear down the notion of the “difficult” woman, she invited iconic Chilean musician Mon LaFerte to collaborate. The two reworked “Yo Misma Fui Mi Ruta” by Puerto Rican poet Julia de Burgos, emphasizing that being “difficult” is just a matter of opinion.

Mon Laferte remarked in a statement about the collaboration, “I like iLe’s voice. It has a lot of personality, and I really enjoy the type of music that she makes. Although the song was already in the works, iLe invited me to write a new part of it, so it was a challenge to add something more to a story that already existed.”

You can listen to “Traguito” below and on 88Nine by tuning your FM dial in Milwaukee or streaming worldwide on our website and mobile app.
