Every Monday, “Add of the Week” unveils all the new songs going into the 88Nine on-air playlist, with one hand-picked selection put in the spotlight by a member of our music team.
Jangly, fuzzy guitars. A drum beat that begs for a bit of dancing. Sweet indie-pop vocals. If that sounds good to you (how could it not?), then Smut’s “Soft Engine” is for you.
Lead singer Tay Roebuck delivers those vocals with a dreamy sense that this song was perhaps written for someone special. A first love, maybe? I dig the bit at the end that sounds like she might be reading from her journal, hoping that the object of her affection hears this song.
This whole vibe reminds me of The Darling Buds, a band I loved in the early ‘90s — Britpop and shoegaze, but with a fresh update. That’s probably why I picked this is our Add of the Week.
You can listen to “Soft Engine” below and on 88Nine by tuning your FM dial in Milwaukee or streaming worldwide on our website and mobile app.
