5 things to do this weekend | March 9-12th

#1

Patti Smith

Hard to believe, but it's been nearly four decades since rocker Patti Smith has been to Milwaukee and this evening she makes her much anticipated return and will be performing at the Milwaukee Theater. At 70, the circle seems to have become full for the punk icon and this tour's emphasis on her seminal, 1975 release Horses, simply underscores this notion. This is one of those shows that simply won't come around again; an artist who blazed her own trail and helped shape the sound of Rock and Roll in the 70's, famously collaborated with Bruce Springsteen and famously dated controversial photographer Robert Maplethorpe. Not only that, she can still show the next generation what cool looks and sounds like.

Tonight at 8pm @ Milwaukee Theater

#2

Abbey Jeanne + Paper Holland + D'Amato

In what looks like one of the best lineups of local talent this weekend, 414 Live guest Abbey Jeanne has teamed with 88Nine faves Paper Holland and D'Amato for a greater-than the sum of its parts-show at Bay View's Cactus Club this Friday. And what great parts these artists have to play; Abbey Jeanne is an up-and-comer, a gifted singer whose music evokes a certain magic that is bound to charm while Paper Holland has blossomed into a tight little indie rock four-piece while D'Amato continues to amaze with a lyrical virtuosity that makes his live performances must-see events in their own right. You can get a taste of Abbey Jeanne's stylings tonight at 5pm in a free show here at 88Nine and I encourage you all to check out what I'm certain will be a great showcase and to hear Abbey's new album Rebel Love, live.

Friday at 9pm @ Cactus Club

#3

Horseshoes and Hand Grenades

Horseshoes and Hand Grenades is bringing their brand of progressive high-energy folk music with strong roots in old-timey Americana and bluegrass to the Pabst Theater this Friday. They're promising "a foot-stompin’ good time" and  with special guests, Dead Man Winter. H&HG are an Appleton-based outfit whose open-mic beginnings underscore exactly how far they've come now that they regularly headline some of the biggest venues in the area. You should expect what the band has become quite good at; great songwriting and music that's easy to approach and even easier to love.

Friday at 7pm @ The Pabst Theater

#4

Bodeans

It's the Bodeans! C'mon...

Friday at 8pm @ Potawatomi’s Northern Lights Casino

#5

Whips + Soul Low + Less is More

Another great local lineup this weekend features rockers Whips and 88Nine Band of The Year Soul Low who've teamed with Less Is More for a little, small club show at Riverwest's Public House. If your living local this Saturday, and your local is Riverwest, peep this show. Pretty sure it'll be dope.

Saturday at 10pm @ Riverwest Public House
