Milwaukee’s July 3 lakefront event returns, with drones replacing fireworks

Milwaukee County Parks

Almost exactly a year ago, the Milwaukee County Parks Department issued a statement that the July 3 fireworks over Veterans Park would not take place due to a “lack of sponsorship.”

That void has been filled by several local organizations and individuals, led by presenting sponsor Michael F. Hupy, although the July 3 event will look quite different upon its return, with drones replacing fireworks.

“This drone show is an exciting and environmentally conscious way to celebrate our community,” Milwaukee County Parks executive director Guy Smith said in a release. “Unlike traditional fireworks, drone shows reduce noise and air pollution while still delivering an unforgettable experience.

“We’re grateful for the leadership of County Executive David Crowley and the support of the Milwaukee Parks Foundation in making this celebration possible. It’s about making memories and ensuring everyone feels welcome in these shared spaces.”

The plan as outlined in the release is for three waves of drones to take over the skies above Lake Michigan’s shoreline for 14 minutes each. In combination with synchronized music, the overall performance will run 45 minutes and feature Milwaukee landmarks, local themes and a dose of patriotism.

Public viewing areas will be available at McKinley Beach and McKinley Park, although the show will be generally visible along the lakefront. You’ll be able to park at the Coast Guard Station Lot, McKinley Marina Parking Lot and McKinley Tennis Court Lot for $20 per vehicle starting at 2 p.m. Overnight parking is strictly prohibited, and you won’t be allowed to reserve an actual viewing spot until 2 p.m. July 3.

When you secure your real estate, you’ll have access to the Milwaukee County Parks beer stands that serve Molson Coors, Lakefront Brewery and White Claw products, as well as beverages from the Pepsi lineup. There will also be food from vendors including Heavenly Roasted Nuts, Flips Donuts, Rolling Cones Ice Cream Truck and Sweet Delight Kettle Corn.

“The July 3rd lakefront celebration is an important event for thousands of community members,” Hupy said in the release. “I was committed to doing whatever it takes to bring it back this year. I am grateful for the return of the celebration with a drone show, and I am honored to be the presenting sponsor.”

Also helping fund this year’s event are Bank of America; the Northwestern Mutual Foundation; Johnson Controls; the Milwaukee Admirals; Carroll University, Aviation and Drone Technologies; T&M Partners; Ted and Mary Kellner; Nan Gardetto; and the Brewers Community Foundation.
